The Hyundai i20 is awaiting a new generation update. The car has been spotted testing abroad and in India as well. The most recent sighting was in Scandinavia where the vehicle was undergoing low temperature testing. A glimpse of the interior has been captured during this outing and here is what we know.
What to expect?
The most significant change in the upcoming i20 will be a refreshed dashboard layout. The dashboard now houses a curved continuous display extending from the driver console to the infotainment screen. We have seen this layout on the latest Venue and the new Kia cars. Both the displays are expected to be large 12.5-inch screens.
The steering wheel unit has been changed as well. The new three-spoke unit will have the four dots instead of the traditional Hyundai logo. The central control layout too is expected to get a refresh much like the Venue.
In terms of tech features, we could expect the ADAS-suite from the Venue to make a debut in the i20 as well. The 360-degree camera, and the latest safety suite will also make its way to the new-gen i20.
Exterior changes
On the outside, the i20 is expected to get a visual overhaul. The new Venue got a new grille and a refreshed rear. We can expect the i20 to follow Hyundai’s latest design language. This would include connected LED bars, new DRLs and LED light units. There will also be a N-line version with sporty exteriors.
As for the powertrain, it will remain unchanged. The hatch will continue to get the 1.2L naturally aspirated motor mated to a 5-speed manual transmission or a CVT-automatic. For the performance enthusiasts, there will be the 1.0L turbo petrol mated to a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DCT transmission.
Launch timeline
While there is no official chatter about the launch timeline of the new i20, it is expected to be revealed this year. Our guess is sometime in Jul-Aug just in time to cash in on the festive season.
