Why is Triumph downsizing to 350cc from 400cc?

Triumph India will launch its first 350cc engine motorcycle in March 2026. The official announcement was made recently by Rajiv Bajaj.

Speaking of the details, the new 350cc engine will be a downsized version of the current 399cc motor, which powers the complete 400 range, including the Speed 400, Scrambler 400X, Thruxton 400, and the Scrambler 400 XC.

The reason behind the downsizing is the new GST 2.0 rates. As per the revised taxation slabs, motorcycles under 350cc are limited to 18% GST, while the products above this range are subjected for 40% taxation.

With that said, we believe that the design and features will remain unaltered on the 350cc models. Triumph is likely to keep the nameplates as they are, but the suffix will be changed for all motorcycles.

While Rajiv Bajaj has confirmed the launch timeline of the first 350cc bike, we are unsure whether it will be the Speed 350 or any other model that will break the ice. More details are likely to be revealed in the coming days.
