- Maruti Suzuki to reveal its second EV next year
- Unveiling to take place during the 2027 Bharat Mobility Expo
- Most likely to be an Ertiga-based three-row MPV
A latest online report claims that Maruti Suzuki will reveal its second electric vehicle in India early next year. This upcoming model will expand the electric portfolio of the brand, which is currently led by a single model, i.e. the e Vitara.
As per the report, this new car could be either one of two upcoming models. One of these upcoming models has already been spotted testing, which is a three-row MPV that is likely to be based on the Ertiga’s platform, and it is internally codenamed YMC.
The second possibility is that of a new compact-sized crossover or SUV that is likely to be positioned as an electric counterpart of Fronx or Brezza. This is a rapidly growing segment where Maruti currently lacks, and rivals like the Tata Punch EV are selling like hot cakes.
Not long ago, three Maruti test mules were spotted heading towards the higher altitude mountains in the Himalayas. One of these was the YMC electric MPV, which gave us a closer look of what to expect.
The test car looked substantially bigger than the Ertiga, and its design language hints at a premium offering, which could be positioned somewhere around the Mahindra BEV 6 or XEV 9E. Although its size is not as big as the XEV 9E, the YMC could be a good rival to the Kia Carens Clavis EV, which is currently the only electric mid-segment MPV in India on sale.
With that said, Maruti is also preparing a new sub-compact SUV to rival the Tata Punch. This SUV is likely to be launched next year in multiple powertrains, and there is a possibility that Maruti will launch an all-electric avatar of this upcoming model.
We believe more details will surface going forward, but the YMC is where we would put our stakes on.
