Yamaha is taking its YE-01 electric motocross concept from the show floor to the racetrack. The motorcycle will make an exhibition run at the 2026 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations in France from October 2, as Yamaha continues developing it with the upcoming MXEP electric motocross racing series in mind.
The YE-01 was first showcased at EICMA 2025 and has been developed jointly with French electric motorcycle specialist Electric Motion SAS. Yamaha has contributed its motocross expertise, while the two companies have jointly developed the dedicated electric power unit. The chassis draws on technology developed through the YZ450F programme.
What makes the YE-01 particularly interesting is its hydraulic wet multi-plate clutch. Unlike most electric motorcycles, which can deliver drive without a conventional clutch, Yamaha has retained one to give the rider greater control over the drive force through the clutch lever. This is particularly relevant in motocross, where managing traction and power delivery can be an important part of riding technique.
The motorcycle uses a liquid-cooled AC synchronous motor and a lithium-ion battery. Yamaha has not yet revealed its peak power, battery capacity, kerb weight or riding duration.
The concept also has serious off-road hardware. It gets 345 mm of ground clearance, while measuring 2,175 mm long, 825 mm wide and 1,275 mm tall. Yamaha says the new frame was developed with the objective of delivering stable handling and precise control.
There is currently no indication that the YE-01 will enter production or come to India. For now, Yamaha appears focused on using competition development to understand electric control systems, thermal management and the possibilities of electrification in motocross.
Final thoughts
A clutch on an electric motocross bike sounds unusual, but Yamaha’s reasoning is quite straightforward: retain the rider involvement that makes motocross engaging while exploring what electric power can add to the experience.
