Toyota is preparing a major update for the Fortuner, with the SUV expected to make its global debut on December 1, 2026. India is likely to get the updated model in 2027, although Toyota Kirloskar Motor has not announced an official launch date for the domestic market.
Despite being one of the established names in India’s premium SUV segment, the Fortuner has faced growing competition from newer models. The upcoming update is expected to focus on design, cabin technology and safety equipment rather than an entirely new platform.
Expected design changes
Spy shots suggest the updated SUV will retain its upright stance and familiar proportions, but receive several sheet-metal revisions. At the front, the changes could include a more prominent grille, sharper lighting elements and a taller-looking bonnet.
The rear is expected to get a redesigned tailgate, revised tail-lamp graphics and a connected LED light bar. The overall design direction appears to draw inspiration from Toyota’s latest Hilux, while retaining the Fortuner’s rugged appearance. Final design details remain concealed by camouflage.
Cabin and technology upgrades expected
The interior could see some of the most significant changes. Reports indicate that the updated Fortuner may borrow design cues and technology from the latest Hilux, including a larger touchscreen infotainment system, a fully digital instrument cluster and revised dashboard materials.
An expanded Toyota Safety Sense package is also expected on at least some variants. Potential additions include adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking and lane-keeping assistance. Toyota has not confirmed the final equipment list for the Indian-spec SUV.
Familiar diesel powertrain likely to continue
The 2.8-litre diesel engine is expected to remain, paired with manual and automatic transmission options. The four-wheel-drive configuration is also likely to continue. Toyota could consider bringing back the 2.7-litre petrol engine, although this has not been confirmed.
The SUV is expected to retain its IMV ladder-frame platform and basic bodyshell, with extensive styling and cabin revisions instead of a complete architectural change.
