Bharat NCAP 2.0 to offer better clarity about vehicle safety

The new draft notification of the updated rules for vehicle testing for BNCAP by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has raised the eyebrows of every carmaker in India. The government is working on the new crash test rules, which will be stricter and bring more clarity to buyers.

As per the details, MoRTH has notified the new draft rule for the BNCAP under the AIS-97 (Revision 1), which will be based on the five verticals. These five verticals will offer more clarity regarding the vehicle’s safety, structure, and overall build quality.

According to the details, the new changes will introduce a 100-point safety rating system. Out of these 100 points, crash protection will have a 55% share, vulnerable road-user protection will have a 20% share, safe driving will have a 10% share, accident avoidance will have a 10% share, and post-crash safety will have a 5% share in the overall assessment.

The new rules will also mandate the ESC or the Electronic Stability Control system along with six airbags, including the curtain airbags. The automatic collision avoidance braking system has been excluded from the new update as of now.

Additionally, from 2027-2029 onwards, vehicles will have to score at least 70% points to get a 5-star rating, while this bar will be raised to 80% score from 2029-2031. Meanwhile, cars like the Mahindra Bolero with jump seats will not be eligible for the crash testing as they are already rated as unsafe.

The new set of five verticals will include the following tests:

  • 64 km/h offset frontal impact test
  • 50 km/h full frontal impact test
  • 50 km/h mobile lateral barrier impact test
  • 32 km/h oblique pole side impact test
  • 50 km/h mobile rigid rear impact test

The current BNCAP rules are set to expire in September 2027. Therefore, it is highly likely that the new Bharat NCAP 2.0 safety rules will be imposed from October 2027.
