CFMoto has taken a bold step in the middleweight performance segment with the reveal of the new CFMoto 500SR. While most manufacturers have shifted toward parallel-twin engines in this category, CFMoto has gone in the opposite direction. The 500SR uses a proper inline-four engine, a layout that many enthusiasts associate with some of the most exciting sportbikes ever built.
Powertrain
At the heart of the 500SR sits a newly developed 499cc inline-four motor that produces around 79hp and revs close to 12,500rpm. That figure immediately puts it in an interesting spot in the middleweight class. The focus here is not just outright power but the character of the engine itself. Inline-fours are known for their smooth delivery, high-revving nature and a soundtrack that simply feels special. In a segment now filled with parallel twins, that mechanical character alone could make the bike stand out.
Design
The design of the motorcycle leans heavily on retro sportbike inspiration. The front gets a distinctive round LED headlamp integrated into a compact fairing, giving the bike a visual link to classic racing machines from the past. The fairing flows cleanly into a sculpted fuel tank and a sharp tail section, creating proportions that look compact and purposeful. It feels nostalgic without looking dated, which is not easy to achieve.
Note-worthy features
Underneath the styling sits modern hardware. The 500SR uses upside-down front forks and a rear monoshock setup to handle suspension duties. Braking comes from dual front discs paired with radial calipers and ABS. The bike also gets a digital instrument cluster and full LED lighting. These elements suggest that CFMoto intends the 500SR to be more than just a design exercise. It wants the bike to deliver genuine sportbike performance.
The middleweight sportbike category has become extremely competitive in recent years. Manufacturers such as Kawasaki and Yamaha already have strong offerings like the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-4R and the Yamaha R7. What makes the 500SR interesting is that it approaches the segment with a very different philosophy. Instead of chasing simplicity and cost reduction with twin-cylinder engines, CFMoto has chosen complexity and character.
