Chery Jaecoo J5 coming soon, what to expect?
JSW Motors is gearing up to introduce cars in the throat-cutting auto market of India. The brand that has prior experience of handling MG in India, is tying with Chery, a renowned Chinese carmaker, to launch PHEV and BEVs in India in the near future.
The latest spy shots of Jaecoo J5, a successful PHEV and BEV in China, come from Pune, where its test mule was spotted during a city run. Jaecoo is a subsidiary of Chery, and the J5 doing test runs in India confirms that it could possibly get launched via JSW Motors.
Speaking of the J5, it comes with a plug-in hybrid and a fully electric powertrain in China. The J5 also sells in the Middle East and does fine numbers over there. It is positioned in the C-segment, and it will compete with the Mahindra XEV 9S and the Tata Safari in India.
The J5 measures 4,380 mm in length and has a wheelbase of 2,620 mm. This throws it in the D-segment category of SUVs in India. This also means that it will offer a spacious cabin and a plush ride experience.
On the outside, the Chinese-spec J5 looks like a baby Range Rover Sport. It has the same boxy silhouette with a tapering roofline, connected LED lights, and a vertical front stance with clean and sophisticated body panels.
On the inside, it gets a plush cabin layout with five seats and leather upholstery. The key highlights include the dual-pane sunroof, a 14.8-inch vertical infotainment screen, a slim 10.25-inch digital instrument console, and features like ADAS safety, wireless charging, an 8-speaker sound system, and more.
The PHEV version of the J5 is powered by a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine that is paired with a 1.83 kWh battery pack. It develops 221 bhp and 295 Nm of power and torque, while delivering 18.8 km/l of fuel efficiency. Meanwhile, the BEV version packs a 58.9 kWh battery pack and offers a claimed range of 402 km.
Meanwhile, MG is also preparing to launch its first plug-in hybrid SUV in India, which will also compete with the J5. This model is likely to be a badge-engineered Starlight 560 SUV.
