Chery Jaecoo J5: Everything we know so far
The latest spotting of the upcoming Jaecoo J5 SUV comes from Maharashtra. The test mule, which is heavily camouflaged, was seen parked roadside during a road test run.
While not many details are available regarding its India launch and specifications, online rumours hint that JSW Motors is planning to introduce Chery sub-brands like Jaecoo J5, iCar V23, and Jetour T2 in India.
JSW Motors will launch independently later this year, and it will be sourcing its products from Chery Automobiles, which is a big giant in China and the Middle East. However, these cars will be badge-engineered, and the test mule seen here is possibly doing homologation runs.
Speaking of the Jaecoo J5, it is a 5-seater mid-size SUV that will take on the rivals like Maruti Suzuki Victoris and the Hyundai Alcazar. It boasts a Range Rover-esque design with a boxy silhouette and streamlined body panels.
On the inside, it features a premium cabin with high-quality materials and a minimalist dashboard design that includes a two-spoke steering wheel, ambient lights, and a big vertical screen for infotainment.
Internationally, Chery offers the Jaecoo J5 with a 1.5L and a 1.6L petrol engine mated to a CVT auto transmission. However, its highlight is the BEV powertrain with battery capacity of up to 60.9 kWh, offering 207 bhp and 280 Nm, and an NEDC-claimed range of up to 461 km.
JSW Motors is currently sorting the Chinese car part imports as the Indian government regulations are slowing down the schedule substantially. Hence, we are not sure whether the Jaecoo J5 will be launched this year or next, but it will certainly be priced around Rs 15-20 lakh.
