Key highlights
- Tesla developing a new entry-level SUV
- Expected to be smaller, lighter, and cheaper than the Tesla Model Y
- Could feature a single motor and smaller battery to cut costs
A new report suggests that Tesla is working on an all-new entry-level SUV. This model will sit below the Model Y and could even undercut the Tesla Model 3, which is currently Tesla’s most accessible car globally.
A smaller SUV with big expectations
The upcoming SUV is expected to measure around 4.3 metres in length. That puts it firmly in the midsize SUV space, but still noticeably smaller than the Model Y. To keep costs in check, the SUV will likely use a smaller battery pack. That means range will take a hit compared to the Model Y, but the trade-off should be a much lower price.
The report also suggests a single-motor setup instead of the usual dual-motor layout. That again points to a focus on efficiency and affordability rather than outright performance. Weight is another area Tesla is targeting. The new SUV could come in at around 1,500kg, which is quite light for an EV.
Production plans already in motion
Tesla has reportedly started discussions with suppliers. That usually means things are moving beyond the idea stage. Production is expected to begin in Shanghai first, with expansion planned for the US and Europe later. That aligns with Tesla’s usual strategy of scaling globally once volumes pick up.
That said, do not expect a launch anytime soon. The timeline is still unclear, and production is unlikely to begin this year.
A shift in strategy, or just a detour
This development is interesting because it comes at a time when Tesla has been shifting focus elsewhere. The company recently discontinued the Tesla Model S and Tesla Model X. Both were long-standing models, but they no longer fit Tesla’s volume-driven strategy.
At the same time, Tesla has been doubling down on autonomous tech and robotaxis. The upcoming Cybercab, which does not even have a steering wheel, is a clear sign of where the company wants to go.
India angle getting stronger
Tesla’s India plans are slowly taking shape. The Model Y is currently its only offering here. But the brand is quietly building its charging backbone.
Its Supercharger network is expanding, with multiple stations now operational. A recent addition in Navi Mumbai adds to the growing footprint, especially along key highway routes.
If Tesla manages to crack pricing with this new SUV, India could become a very important market for it.
