Toyota’s India game plan gets serious with big investments

Key highlights

  • Toyota plans a strong pipeline of in-house SUVs and MPVs
  • Over USD 3 billion investment with new plants in Maharashtra and Bengaluru
  • New Fortuner, Corolla Cross and Land Cruiser FJ part of long-term roadmap

Toyota is quietly preparing one of its biggest product offensives for India. And this time, it is not leaning heavily on rebadged cars.

The brand is shifting focus to in-house developed SUVs and MPVs, backed by a massive investment of over USD 3 billion. New manufacturing facilities are also coming up in Maharashtra and Bengaluru.

Less badge engineering, more Toyota DNA

Toyota’s partnership with Maruti Suzuki has worked well so far. Cars like the Glanza, Hyryder, Rumion and Taisor have helped it scale quickly.

The next phase thankfully looks different. Toyota now wants more control over its product story. That means more models developed in-house, tailored for Indian needs and global export potential. It is a clear shift in strategy.

A new entry-level Innova is coming

The Toyota Innova Hycross is set to play an even bigger role going forward. With the diesel-powered Innova Crysta expected to phase out by 2027 due to stricter emission norms, Toyota is planning a lower-spec version of the Hycross.

This new variant will target fleet buyers. Expect fewer features and a more accessible price point. The hybrid powertrain will stay. That is important, because it helps balance efficiency even with ethanol-blended fuels.

Toyota is also exploring flex-fuel versions of the Hycross. This aligns with India’s push towards higher ethanol blends, and it could become a key part of the MPV’s future.

Electric MPV is in the works

Toyota is also preparing for the EV shift, but in its own way. A new electric MPV, based on Maruti Suzuki’s upcoming three-row EV architecture, is expected around 2027 or 2028.

This model will sit on the Heartect-e platform and will expand Toyota’s MPV portfolio beyond the current lineup. It will likely rival products like the BYD eMAX 7, which gives you a fair idea of where it is headed.

Baby Land Cruiser

One of the most interesting additions is the new Toyota Land Cruiser FJ, expected by 2028. This is essentially a smaller, more accessible Land Cruiser. It will sit on the IMV platform, which already underpins the Fortuner and Hilux.

Toyota is expected to skip diesel here. Instead, the SUV could get a 2.7-litre petrol engine along with strong hybrid and plug-in hybrid options. Production could take place at the upcoming Maharashtra plant, with a significant focus on exports as well. If priced right, this could become a very interesting lifestyle SUV in India.

Corolla Cross is back on track

The Toyota Corolla Cross is making a comeback to Toyota’s India plans. The project was earlier dropped due to low expected volumes. Now, with new production capacity coming online, it is back in consideration.

The SUV is likely to roll out from the Aurangabad facility around 2028 or 2029. Toyota is also evaluating additional body styles based on the same platform, which suggests a broader strategy around this model.

New Fortuner

The Toyota Fortuner is also getting a generational update, although timelines are still unclear. The big news is that it will retain its 2.8-litre diesel engine. Toyota is also expected to add a 48V mild-hybrid system to improve efficiency.

2027 Toyota Fortuner

Importantly, the Fortuner will continue with its ladder-frame chassis. That tells you everything you need to know. Toyota is not planning to dilute what works.

Bigger picture is very clear

Toyota is not chasing quick wins anymore. It is building a long-term portfolio with strong local manufacturing, hybrid leadership, and selective EV expansion. India is now among its top four global markets. This roadmap reflects that importance.
