Triumph Thruxton 400 gets a new 350cc engine – Details
The new Thruxton 400 now features a downsized 350cc engine. This engine has been derived from the previous 399cc engine, and the downsizing is a result of the new GST 2.0 tax slabs.
Last year, the government of India imposed 40% GST on two-wheelers above 350cc, and hence all Triumph 400cc bikes were hit with lower profit margins as the brand decided to absorb the price hike.
However, the engineering team of Triumph’s India branch did an amazing job and downsized the 399cc engine to 349cc by redesigning the crankshaft, reducing the stroke to 56.1mm from 64mm, and redesigning the combustion chamber. The result? 40 PS and 32 Nm, figures that are closer to the bigger 400cc model, yet under the new GST slab.
With this, Triumph has reduced the on-road price of the Thruxton 400 by Rs 21,603. The new 350cc engine-equipped bike is priced at Rs 2,65,442, as opposed to the previous Rs 2,76,522, both ex-showroom, Delhi.
With that said, the chassis, mechanical setup, design, riding ergonomics, colour options, and even the features are unaltered on the updated model. Only the engine size has been reduced. Moreover, the 400 badging remains as it is due to the brand’s global product nomenclature and marketing strategy.
