What is the Chery-JLR Freelander Concept 97 SUV?
Chinese automotive giant Chery and JLR had formed a pact not long ago to make new SUVs. Last year, we learned that the Chery-JLR joint venture will debut the ‘Freelander’ brand as an individual identity, similar to the Range Rover.
Now, the joint venture has taken the cover off the first Freelander model, called Concept 97. Showcased in the concept version, the production-spec Concept 97 SUV will be the first Freelander model to be offered globally.
While not many details were revealed at the preview, the joint venture did reveal that the production-spec model will be 5.1 metres long, and it will offer a wheelbase over 3 metres, which will position it in the luxury category.
The design of the Concept 97 boasts a familiar outlook to the original Freelander 1 model. It has a boxy design with a vertical fascia, twin rectangular LED lights, and a closed grille design with Freelander lettering on a silver plate.
Similarly, the side profile looks a bit identical to the original Freelander 1, save for the unique rear-quarter panel design. The bold shoulder line and the flared wheel arches give it the Defender-like vibes.
The rear design is accentuated by a unique boot that has a silver cover extending to the lower part of the rear bumper. It also features the Freelander lettering, while the rectangular LED taillights give it a modern appeal.
On the inside, it features an immersive design with a dual-step dashboard, featuring a full-width panoramic screen, a big floating infotainment screen, a light theme, a three-spoke steering wheel, and a clean panel design. The flat floor hints that it will offer generous rear space, and it is expected to be offered with 4-seater and 5-seater layouts.
Powering the Freelander Concept 97 will be a wide range of smart powertrain options, including electric, range extender EV, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid. The production-spec Freelander Concept 97 is expected to launch next year in China, and later it will head to the other markets.
