Key Highlights
- Honda has filed a design patent for the ADV 160 in India.
- No official confirmation has been made by HMSI.
- It will rival the Yamaha Aerox 155 and Hero Xoom 160 if launched.Â
Honda sells more scooters in India than anyone else. But ask for a sporty maxi-scooter from HMSI and there is nothing to offer. The Yamaha Aerox 155 owns that space. The Hero Xoom 160 has just entered it. Honda has been watching from the sidelines.
Honda has filed a design patent for the ADV 160 in India. A patent filing is not a launch confirmation. Honda patents vehicles in India regularly without following through. But it is the first concrete step, and it is worth paying attention to.
What the ADV 160 is
The ADV 160 is Honda’s adventure-style maxi-scooter. It is sold in Southeast Asian markets and has been well received there. The design is purposeful and rugged. Dual LED headlamps, a large adjustable windscreen, wide handlebars, and a stepped seat give it a distinct road presence that is very different from the Activa.
Under the bodywork is a 157cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine. It produces 15.7 BHP at 8,500 rpm and 14.7 Nm at 6,500 rpm. That puts it right in line with its rivals on performance.
The ADV 160 rides on 14-inch front and 13-inch rear alloy wheels. Suspension is a 31mm telescopic fork up front with dual shock absorbers at the rear. Ground clearance is 165mm. Kerb weight is 133 kg. Under-seat storage is a generous 27 litres.
Features include a digital instrument console, keyless ignition, LED lighting throughout, and a USB charger.

Should You Get Excited?
Cautiously, yes. Honda’s patent history in India suggests that a filing does not always lead to a launch. But the timing makes sense. The sporty scooter segment is growing fast. The Aerox has proved there is a market for it. The Xoom 160 has added competition. HMSI cannot afford to stay out of this segment for much longer.
