Yamaha R2 likely to launch on August 27 – KTM RC 200 rival

Key highlights

  • Yamaha YZF-R2 trademark receives “Accepted and Approved” status
  • The new R2 is likely to use the R15’s engine with a big bore and more power
  • It is likely to bridge the gap between the R15 and R3

Yamaha filed the nameplate patent for the YZF-R2 sportsbike in India back in 2024. This nameplate patent has now received official approval, as it has been updated online with “Accepted and Approved” status. This has cleared the path for the new R2 to be launched in India, which is expected to take place on August 27.

What to expect from the upcoming Yamaha R2?

The upcoming YZF-R2 sportsbike is likely to be an evolved and bigger version of the R15. In fact, it is likely to use an enlarged version of the 155cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled motor used on the YZF-R15. Online rumours suggest that the R2 could offer a peak power output of around 24-25 bhp, while the peak torque could be around 19 Nm.

Apart from the bigger engine, the new R2 will boast a dedicated riding posture, similar to the R15M. It will also get the premium hardware, including the golden USD forks, preload-adjustable rear monoshock, 17-inch rims, and a lightweight chassis.

The R2 will compete directly with the KTM RC 200, which is priced at Rs 2.14 lakh (ex-showroom). Hence, we can safely assume that the R2 will also be positioned in a similar ballpark.

Considering that the KTM RC 200 focuses on the tech and features, the YZF-R2 is also likely to offer features like different ride modes, traction control modes, a dual-channel ABS, a TFT coloured console with Bluetooth connectivity, SMS and call alerts, turn-by-turn navigation, and more.

Yamaha is yet to officially confirm the launch of the YZF-R2, but we believe that the event scheduled for August 27, 2026, is going to be the reveal of the new R2 sportsbike in India. The R2 will be manufactured in Chennai-based production plant, and it could be exported to the international market from India after the official launch.
