Rumour: Hero Xoom 160 new affordable variant to launch soon

Key highlights

  • Hero Xoom 160 to get a new affordable variant
  • It could be called the VX
  • Likely to miss out on smart features like keyless ignition, etc

Online rumours hint Hero MotoCorp is prepping a new affordable variant of the Xoom 160 with fewer features. This new variant could possibly be named VX, and it is expected to be launched in the coming weeks.

What to expect from the new variant of the Hero Xoom 160?

Hero’s Xoom 160 maxi scooter was launched last year in January. It became the flagship scooter of the brand, and it comes in a single, fully-loaded ZX variant currently. However, the Xoom 160 ZX is priced at Rs 1.43 lakh (ex-showroom), which makes it expensive for buyers who wish to purchase a performance scooter.

Hence, the brand is reported to be working on a new variant with fewer features, which will reduce the price of the Xoom 160 substantially. This version is likely to be called VX, and it will miss out on features like the keyless ignition, start/stop system, smartphone connectivity, turn-by-turn navigation, and probably lose out on the single-channel ABS as well by using a CBS or Combined Braking System as the replacement.

On the visual front, it will remain largely unchanged, save for the new colours and graphics. Technical specifications are also likely to be the same. The current model uses a 156cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled motor that makes 14.6 bhp and 14 Nm of power and torque. This engine is paired to a CVT gearbox.

While the ZX variant comes loaded with 14-inch alloy wheels with block-pattern tyres, we suspect that the new affordable variant could feature more generic tyres as a cost-cutting method. Depending on the features reduced from it, the new variant is expected to be positioned somewhere around Rs 10,000 cheaper than the current ZX variant. More details are likely to surface in the coming days.
