- It is expected to sit below the VF 6 in VinFast’s India line-up
VinFast is not wasting much time expanding its India portfolio. A new sub-4m electric SUV from the Vietnamese manufacturer has been spotted testing on Indian roads, giving us an early look at a model that could target one of the country’s busiest EV segments.
The upcoming SUV is expected to sit below the VF 6 in VinFast’s line-up. Its compact dimensions should also make it eligible for India’s sub-4m category, where the Tata Punch EV and Nexon EV are already established names.
A smaller SUV for a bigger market
The test mule spotted in India is heavily camouflaged, so the final design is still difficult to make out. However, the overall proportions suggest a compact SUV rather than a crossover hatchback. This could rather be the VinFast VF 5 that is already sold in Vietnam.
The VF 5 comes with two battery pack options; a smaller 29.6 kWh or a larger 37.23 kWh. The maximum claimed range is 326 km while the maximum motor output is rated at 136 hp and 135 Nm. It remains to be seen if the same specs will make it to the India models.
Punch EV and Nexon EV could be key rivals
The new VinFast VF 5 will enter a segment that is becoming increasingly competitive. The Tata Punch EV has already established itself as one of India’s more popular compact electric SUVs, while the Nexon EV offers buyers more space and a wider range of battery and powertrain choices.
VinFast will therefore need to get the basics right. Price, range and charging capability will be crucial if the new SUV is to make an impact.
