Key highlights
- Kia Sorento production has commenced at the Anantapur plant
- India-spec SUV will be offered with hybrid AWD and diesel powertrains
- Launch scheduled for September 4, with bookings already open
Kia India has released the first official images of the Sorento ahead of its India launch. More importantly, production of the premium three-row SUV has now started at Kia’s Anantapur facility in Andhra Pradesh, with the first India-spec Sorento rolling off the production line.
The Sorento will be launched in India on September 4, 2026. Pre-bookings are already open through Kia dealerships and the company’s official website.
First Kia hybrid SUV for India
The Sorento marks an important addition to Kia’s Indian portfolio. It will be the company’s first hybrid SUV with all-wheel drive in India.
Kia will also offer the Sorento with a diesel engine, giving buyers a choice between hybrid and diesel powertrains. The company has not yet revealed the India-spec engine output, battery capacity, range or detailed transmission specifications.
That means the Sorento will take a slightly different approach from Kia’s existing premium SUVs. Instead of going fully electric, it will offer customers a choice between electrification and a familiar diesel powertrain.
Kia shows off the design
The official images reveal a large and fairly imposing SUV. Kia says the Sorento follows its latest bold and progressive design language, with a commanding stance and distinctive exterior detailing.
The SUV also gets a premium-looking cabin, although Kia is yet to reveal the complete equipment list for the India-spec model.
The Sorento is positioned as a premium three-row family SUV, adding another model to Kia’s growing premium portfolio.
Kia AI Assistant makes global debut
The India-spec Sorento will introduce Kia’s AI Assistant powered by Live Generative AI. Kia says this will make the Indian Sorento the first Kia model globally to introduce the technology.
Unlike a conventional voice assistant, the system is designed to support more natural, conversational interactions while accessing real-time information. It will also mark the first introduction of Live Generative AI in the Indian automotive industry, according to Kia.
The Sorento is being manufactured locally at Kia’s Anantapur plant, which has been the company’s production base in India since 2019. The facility has an annual installed capacity of 4 lakh vehicles.
