Audi has finally brought the third-generation Q3 to India. The new compact luxury SUV gets a substantial design and technology overhaul, while retaining the formula that has made the Q3 one of Audi India’s important entry-level models.
The new Q3 is expected to go on sale during the festive season, with pricing likely to be announced closer to its launch.
Much bolder styling
The third-generation Q3 looks considerably different from the SUV it replaces. Audi has given it a more upright stance and a large octagonal single-frame grille, flanked by a new split-headlamp arrangement. The upper lighting elements house the daytime running lights, while the main headlamp units sit lower down.
The new Q3 is also around 40 mm longer than the outgoing model, although the wheelbase remains unchanged. The side profile gets more pronounced wheel-arch treatment, while the rear features split tail-lamps connected by a light bar.
Audi also offers advanced Digital Matrix LED headlights internationally, along with OLED rear lighting and illuminated Audi rings. The India-spec model is expected to ride on 18-inch alloy wheels.
New cabin
The interior is where the new Q3 takes another major step forward. The dashboard is dominated by a curved display arrangement comprising an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.8-inch MMI touchscreen. The infotainment system supports features including wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Audi has also moved the gear selector to the steering column, freeing up additional space on the centre console. This creates room for more storage, including cupholders and a larger storage compartment.
Other expected features include a 360-degree camera, three-zone climate control, panoramic sunroof, connected-car technology and a head-up display. The Q3 also gets an expanded ADAS package internationally, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance and emergency braking.
Powetrain
Unlike the European Q3, which is available with petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains, India will get the SUV with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine. It develops 204 hp and 320 Nm and is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. quattro all-wheel drive will be standard. Audi claims the Q3 can accelerate from 0-100 kmph in 7.1 seconds.
This combination could give the Q3 an interesting advantage over its key rivals, particularly the BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLA, which use less powerful petrol powertrains in India.
For Audi India, the new Q3 is an important product as the brand prepares a wider product offensive that will also include the A5 and Q9.
