Matter Motor Works is preparing for a significant expansion of its electric motorcycle portfolio. The Ahmedabad-based EV maker has announced plans to launch four new electric motorcycles over the next 12 to 24 months, all based on the platform that currently underpins its AERA electric motorcycle.
The announcement comes alongside a $25 million (around Rs 240 crore) growth capital raise, with existing investors participating in the latest funding round. Matter says the money will be used to expand manufacturing and supply-chain capacity, strengthen distribution and brand building, and accelerate product development.
Four new electric bikes are coming
Matter hasn’t revealed the names or detailed specifications of the four upcoming motorcycles yet. However, the company says all four will be built around the AERA platform, using its existing in-house powertrain, battery, electronics and software architecture. This should allow Matter to develop different motorcycles for different rider segments without starting completely from scratch each time.
The move is also in line with the company’s broader product roadmap revealed earlier this year. Matter had outlined plans to expand beyond its current motorcycle into segments including naked street motorcycles, adventure motorcycles, youth-focused motorcycles and electric scooters.
So, while the company hasn’t confirmed which four products will arrive first, there is clearly a much wider portfolio in the works.
AERA platform
Matter’s existing AERA is one of the more unusual electric motorcycles currently on sale in India. It uses a 4-speed HyperShift manual gearbox, making it one of the few production electric motorcycles to offer a geared transmission. The AERA also gets a liquid-cooled powertrain and battery, a connected 7-inch touchscreen, three riding modes and a claimed 172km IDC range.
The company has also developed much of the motorcycle’s core technology in-house, including its battery systems, powertrain, control electronics and software. It currently has 111 granted patents and works with a supplier network of more than 150 companies..
For now, the four upcoming motorcycles remain largely under wraps. But the direction is clear.
