Kia is preparing to add a hybrid powertrain to the Carnival, giving its premium MPV a petrol-electric alternative to the existing diesel. The Carnival hybrid is expected to launch in India in the coming weeks, and Kia has now revealed key details of its powertrain.
What’s new?
The biggest change is under the bonnet. The Carnival hybrid will use a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 180 hp and 265 Nm. This is paired with a more powerful electric motor producing 73.4 hp and 304 Nm. Interestingly, the electric motor is more powerful than the unit used in the recently introduced Sorento hybrid, with 8.4 hp and 40 Nm more output.
Kia has not yet revealed the complete hybrid system specifications, including the battery capacity and claimed fuel efficiency. However, the powertrain is expected to use a 6-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox. An all-wheel-drive option could also be offered on higher-spec versions, although this has not been officially confirmed yet.
Multiple powertrain options
The hybrid will sit alongside the existing 2.2-litre diesel Carnival. The diesel produces 190 hp and 441 Nm and is paired with an 8-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox driving the front wheels.
This gives the Carnival an interesting choice of powertrains. The diesel continues to make sense for buyers who regularly cover long distances, particularly with a large seven-seat MPV. The hybrid, meanwhile, could appeal to buyers who want smoother urban driving and the potential for better efficiency without moving to a fully electric vehicle.
The Carnival is already one of the largest and most spacious MPVs available in India, measuring 5,155 mm long with a 3,090 mm wheelbase. Its seven-seat layout and premium second-row captain seats make it particularly attractive as a chauffeur-driven family vehicle.
Final thoughts
The Carnival hybrid could be an important addition to Kia’s India portfolio. For a large premium MPV, combining a turbo-petrol engine with a strong electric motor could offer a compelling balance between performance, refinement and efficiency.
The one number we are still waiting for is the most important one, the price. If Kia can keep the premium over the diesel reasonable, the hybrid could make a lot of sense.
