Royal Enfield has reintroduced the first-generation Himalayan ADV bike, but with a bigger heart. The new Himalayan 440 has been launched at Rs 2.29 lakh (ex-showroom), and it now packs a 443cc oil-cooled engine with a new six-speed transmission.
The new Himalayan 440 is based on the Scram 440, but the engineers have redesigned the front suspension rake and retuned the engine gearbox as per the weight and dimensional changes. The Himalayan 440 retains the design from the first Himalayan, which was later replaced by the Sherp 450 engine-equipped Himalayan 450.
The new ADV is available in three colours: Mustang Brown, Nelong White, and Sela Black. All of these colours feature unique graphics and colour contrasts, which set them apart in their overall look.
In terms of styling, the bike features a sculpted 15-litre fuel tank, a telescopic long-travel front suspension, a split seat with 800 mm riding height, halogen turn indicators, an oval LED headlight, a sleek LED taillight, a large windscreen, and 21-inch front and 17-inch rear tube-spoked wheels. In comparison to the Scram 440, it features 10 mm more front suspension travel, which improves its off-road capabilities.
The new 443cc single-cylinder engine has also been carried forward from the Scram 440. It generates 25.4 bhp and 34 Nm, which is a healthy output for relaxed highway touring and high-altitude riding. The list of features includes a new semi-digital instrument console that features an LCD to display the vitals of the bike, and a Tripper pod digital gauge for smartphone turn-by-turn navigation.
With the price set at Rs 2.29 lakh, its main competition will be the Hero Xpulse 210, Yezdi Adventure, and the Suzuki V-Strom 250. We believe that the aggressive pricing will be a core strength of this new Himalayan, as it is nearly Rs 80,000 cheaper than the Himalayan 450, and it offers strong value with its rugged setup when compared to its rivals.
Moreover, it will be a hit among the rental agencies, which thrive on such rugged and easy-to-fix ADV bikes in the treacherous regions like Ladakh.
