Suzuki Motor Corporation has announced a new technology strategy that aims to halve the development time for new vehicles by around 2030. The company wants to achieve this while simultaneously improving development efficiency by 30% and manufacturing efficiency by 50%.
What’s changing
Suzuki currently takes around 40-48 months to develop a new vehicle, and the company is targeting a development cycle of approximately 24 months. The shorter timeline will come from changing how different teams work during a vehicle programme, with planning, engineering, production, quality and procurement functions working concurrently from the early stages instead of operating sequentially.
Greater use of digital engineering and modularisation will also play an important role. Suzuki plans to use digital tools to apply its accumulated design standards, testing knowledge and real-world vehicle data during development. Shared modules across different products should further reduce duplication while allowing vehicles to be adapted for individual markets.
India role
India is set to play a particularly important role in this strategy. Suzuki plans to strengthen the country as a manufacturing and export hub, targeting annual production capacity of around 4 million vehicles from FY2030 onwards. Technologies developed in Japan will be shared globally, while products will be adapted to suit individual markets and their specific requirements.
The faster development approach will also support Suzuki’s multi-powertrain strategy. Instead of moving exclusively towards battery-electric vehicles, the company plans to continue developing BEVs, hybrids, internal-combustion engines, CNG and flex-fuel technologies according to the requirements of individual markets.
Suzuki’s technology roadmap includes series-hybrid systems, its Super Ene Charge hybrid system, new direct-injection turbocharged engines, the lightweight S Light architecture and SDV Lite. The company is also working on technologies that can reduce vehicle weight and improve energy efficiency.
For India, the new direct-injection turbo-petrol engine is particularly relevant, with Suzuki identifying the country as one of the markets where the technology could be deployed. The company is also continuing its focus on CNG and compressed biogas as part of its broader multi-pathway approach.
