Triumph has expanded its modern-classic portfolio with the Bonneville T40 and T40 Black, bringing one of its most recognisable motorcycle names to its smaller-capacity platform.
The new motorcycles retain the visual recipe associated with the Bonneville name. A teardrop fuel tank, round LED headlamp, long mudguards, spoked wheels, peashooter exhaust and twin rear shocks give the T40 a distinctly traditional appearance. The motorcycle also gets hand-painted coach lining on its two-tone paint schemes.
The T40 is offered in three colour combinations, while the T40 Black gets a darker treatment with Matt Pewter Grey and Matt Phantom Black, along with blacked-out components.
Familiar powertrain
Power comes from a dedicated version of Triumph’s 350cc TR Series single-cylinder engine. It gets a revised cylinder head and a Bonneville-specific tune designed to deliver stronger low-end and mid-range performance. The engine produces 29 PS at 7,000rpm and 31.2 Nm at 5,500rpm. It uses electronic throttle control and is paired with a six-speed gearbox and slip-and-assist clutch.
The T40 also gets three preset riding modes, Road, Rain and Eco, along with two customisable modes. Each mode alters throttle response, traction control and ABS intervention.
More tech than its retro styling suggests
Perhaps the biggest surprise is the equipment package. The T40 and T40 Black get a 4-inch full-colour circular TFT display with a Heritage Mode that can replicate the appearance of an analogue instrument cluster.
Full navigation is integrated through Triumph’s Navigation App, while smartphone connectivity enables calls and music control. Cruise control, lean-sensitive cornering ABS and traction control are standard. A USB-C charging socket is also included.
The chassis uses 43mm front forks and twin rear shocks, with 18-inch front and 17-inch rear spoked wheels. Braking comes from a 310 mm front disc with a twin-piston caliper and a 255 mm rear disc.
Accessible dimensions
The T40 has a 790 mm seat height, which can be reduced to 770mm with an optional low seat. Its declared wet weight is 195kg and it gets a 14.5-litre fuel tank.
Triumph has not announced pricing yet. The company says prices will be revealed shortly, ahead of the motorcycles reaching dealerships.
