MG Astor discontinued in India, replacement model coming soon

Key highlights

  • MG Astor axed in India
  • Replacement model under works
  • Monthly average sales for the past year were 112 units

MG has officially axed the Astor SUV in India. Launched in 2021, Astor was competing against rivals like Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Grand Vitara, and Toyota Hyryder, but it failed to sell in the required numbers to defeat any of its rivals.

Why did the MG Astor discontinue in India?

The main reason behind the discontinuation of the Astor is its poor sales. The Astor was struggling to sell even in three-digit figures nationwide for a long period. Additionally, MG had not updated the Astor with any significant facelift or a new-gen model ever since its launch, while the rivals kept updating and offering more and more tech and features.

Moreover, the Astor was offered with only two engine options, both petrol. The lower and mid variants offered a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine that offered 110 bhp, while being paired with a 6-speed MT and a CVT transmission. On the other hand, the range-topping variants got a 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine offering 140 bhp with a CVT gearbox.

Sadly, both of these engines offered low fuel economy and modest performance. Hence, these stood no competition against the Korean and Japanese cars. Meanwhile, the lack of CNG and diesel engines were also a big deal-breaker for new buyers that were kept away from the Astor. The last recorded ex-showroom price of the Astor was Rs 9.79 lakh (base variant).

What’s next: New MG Astor coming soon?

As per the online rumours, MG is working on a replacement model for the Astor in India. This could be the MG One SUV, which is essentially the new-gen Astor that is currently sold in global markets like the Middle East and China. However, it is not yet confirmed which model will replace the Astor in India, but we can certainly hope that an all-new model could arrive by the end of next year.
