Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has issued a new draft notification that is set to mandate Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) on all cars in India. The new mandate states that all new cars manufactured and sold from October 1, 2030, will come equipped with AEB as standard.
Additionally, models that are in production before 2030 will get two more years to add AEB, i.e. by October 2032. This draft covers the M1 category, which covers all vehicles with up to 8 seats. This means that all passenger cars will fall under this new safety norm update.
Additionally, cars and commercial vehicles that come equipped with AEB will now have to comply with the AIS-185 (Automotive Industry Standard). This includes all M1 category and N1 category (commercial vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes) vehicles to comply with the AIS-185 standard.
The automatic emergency braking system works with front sensors and cameras, which keep reading the front traffic. In case a driver fails to brake on time, the AEB system comes into effect and applies emergency braking to avoid a frontal collision. This system proves as a boon in dicey driving conditions as such during the fog season.
Moreover, MoRTH has also issued that all cars that come with the Automatic Command Steering Functionalities (ACSF) will need to meet the AIS-193 standard. Meanwhile, the vehicles equipped with Emergency Lane Keeping System, or Lane Keeping Assist, will have to comply with the AIS-191 (Part 1). The proposed draft also mandates all vehicles with steering effort to comply with the AIS-193 from October 1, 2027.
