BMW Concept 7 Protection revealed with 612 hp plug-in hybrid powertrain

Key highlights

  • The armoured BMW 7 Series concept is designed to protect occupants against selected handgun ammunition, including 9mm and .44 Magnum rounds.
  • It uses ballistic steel, fibre-reinforced composites, bullet-resistant glass and dedicated attack-warning systems.
  • Power comes from a 612 hp plug-in hybrid powertrain borrowed from the BMW M760e xDrive.

BMW has revealed the Concept 7 Protection, an armoured version of its flagship 7 Series luxury sedan. The concept targets private individuals, businesses and organisations that need additional security without moving to a heavily armoured vehicle that looks dramatically different from a regular luxury car.

The concept sits below BMW’s existing 7 Series Protection VR9 and X5 Protection VR6 in its security-focused line-up. It also previews how the company could expand its Protection range to cater to customers with different security requirements.

BMW Concept 7 Protection: Armour and safety

The Concept 7 Protection complies with the new BayB protection standard and is designed to withstand selected handgun ammunition, including 9×19mm and .44 Magnum rounds.

BMW has integrated ballistic steel and fibre-reinforced composites into the doors, while thicker bullet-resistant glass protects the windows. The protective structure also covers critical overlaps between the doors, glass and bodywork. Additional armour is fitted around the rear-quarter windows, bulkhead and rear wall of the passenger compartment.

The panoramic sunroof retains its familiar exterior appearance, but protective layers beneath it mean the sunblind must remain permanently closed. The electrically operated side windows can be lowered, although not completely.

An intercom system allows occupants to communicate with people outside through microphones and speakers without opening the doors or windows. An attack alarm also triggers visual and audible warnings.

However, the concept is not designed to provide blast protection. Buyers requiring a higher level of security would need to consider BMW’s more heavily armoured models.

Familiar styling, additional rear-seat comfort

The concept retains the conventional 7 Series silhouette, with discreet armour integration intended to avoid drawing attention. The showcased car features a dark grey finish, dual-tone alloy wheels, black exterior detailing and quad exhaust tips.

Inside, it gets Smoke White Merino leather upholstery, Alcantara trim and an M-branded steering wheel. A new rear centre console incorporates a coolbox and a fold-down table with wireless charging. BMW says this rear console will become available in other 7 Series models from the second half of 2027.

Plug-in hybrid powertrain

The Concept 7 Protection uses the M760e xDrive’s plug-in hybrid setup, combining a 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine producing 426 hp with an electric motor generating 197 hp. The combined output is 612 hp and 800 Nm, delivered to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

BMW has recalibrated the drivetrain, chassis, brakes and driver assistance systems to account for the additional protective equipment. The company has not disclosed the concept’s weight or performance figures.
