Hyundai is gearing up to unveil a new electric crossover SUV in the coming months, expanding its EV portfolio with a model that promises affordability, tech, and urban practicality. Slated to debut at IAA Mobility in September, the upcoming EV is expected to be the IONIQ 2, a compact SUV that will sit below the Kona Electric in Hyundai’s lineup.
The new model will be built on the E-GMP platform, which underpins all Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis EVs. It will be a twin to the Kia EV2, sharing architecture and drivetrain components2.
Powertrain and range expectations
While official specs are yet to be confirmed, the crossover is likely to offer:
- 58.3 kWh battery with up to 430 km range (WLTP)
- 81.4 kWh battery with up to 599 km range (WLTP)
- Single front-mounted motor producing 201 hp and 283 Nm of torque
This setup mirrors the Kia EV3, suggesting a focus on front-wheel-drive efficiency and long-range usability.
Interior and infotainment
Hyundai’s new EV will debut the Pleos infotainment system, a next-gen Android-based platform offering:
- Smartphone-like UI with multi-window support
- AI voice assistant
- Adaptive ambient lighting and sound profiles based on drive mode
The dashboard will feature a combined instrument and infotainment display, spanning half its width for a clean, minimalist look.
Pricing and market positioning
Hyundai aims to price the new crossover at around €30,000 (approx. INR 27 lakh), making it one of the most affordable electric SUVs in Europe. It will compete with models like the Renault 4, Volvo EX30, and Citroën ë-C3.
The vehicle will be Hyundai’s sixth global EV, following the IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6, Kona Electric, Inster, and IONIQ 9.
Our thoughts
This is Hyundai doing what it does best—democratizing electric mobility. The IONIQ 2 (or whatever they call it) looks like the kind of EV that could turn heads and win wallets. And with that sub-INR 30 lakh price tag? It’s the kind of crossover that could make EVs mainstream for the masses. Now, let’s hope it lands in India soon.
