Key highlights
- Kia is evaluating a hybrid powertrain for the Seltos for the Indian market.
- The model could arrive by 2027 as part of Kia’s broader electrified push.
- The move targets growing demand for high-mileage, low-maintenance SUVs.
Kia is now considering a hybrid version of the popular midsize SUV Seltos, with a possible market launch around 2027. While Kia has not confirmed final timelines, internal planning and global product direction strongly hint at hybrids becoming a bigger part of the portfolio.
Hybrid portfolio
Kia already offers strong hybrids in several global models, and bringing one to the Seltos feels like the logical next step. The current Indian line-up includes petrol, turbo-petrol and diesel engines, but rising fuel prices and evolving emission norms have pushed buyers to look for smarter alternatives. A hybrid option could strike the right balance between efficiency and performance, especially for city-heavy commuters who don’t want to jump to a fully electric SUV yet.
Timing is right?
The company has been vocal about future-proofing its India operations with a broader electrified range. With the EV market still finding its feet and infrastructure developing at an uneven pace, hybrids offer a smoother transition for mass buyers. If the Seltos gets a hybrid option, expect it to borrow tech from Kia’s global portfolio. The most likely candidate is a 1.6-litre petrol engine paired with an electric motor, a setup already proven in several international models. It delivers strong efficiency without making the driving experience feel dull or complicated.
There’s also a clear market-case building for it. The Toyota Hyryder and Maruti Grand Vitara have already shown how strong hybrids can carve out a loyal customer base despite higher sticker prices. The Seltos hybrid could position itself as a more premium, feature-loaded alternative for buyers who want mileage without sacrificing performance or design appeal.
Kia has also been expanding its manufacturing capabilities and supply chain support in India, which will play a big role in hybrid localisation. The company has already hinted at localising more powertrain components to keep future models competitive, and hybrid tech will fit right into that strategy.
