NHAI tolls to become cashless – Here’s why
As per a recent media report, NHAI has drafted a new rule that will force all toll plazas to stop accepting cash payments nationwide. This new rule is scheduled to go live on April 1, 2026, nationwide.
As per the details, all motorists will now be forced to pay the toll fees only via UPI or FASTags. As of now, NHAI allows cash payments, which are double the standard toll fee for everytime a vehicle crosses a toll. Meanwhile, UPI payment is 1.25 times more expensive than the standard toll fee.
With that said, the main purpose behind the elimination of cash payments is to reduce the unnecessary congestion at the toll plazas and to improve the traffic flow for FASTag users countrywide.
