Ola Electric clears a major hurdle with Roadster X+ government certification

Key highlights

  • Roadster X+ becomes India’s first electric motorcycle certified with an in house developed 4680 Bharat Cell
  • Certified 9.1 kWh battery delivers a claimed range of up to 500 km
  • Government approval clears the path for deliveries to begin in India

Ola Electric has crossed an important milestone in its electric motorcycle journey. The company has received government certification for the Roadster X+ electric motorcycle powered by its in house developed 4680 Bharat Cell battery pack. The approval has been granted under the Central Motor Vehicle Rules by iCAT, a government testing agency. This certification now allows Ola Electric to begin deliveries of the Roadster X+ in India.

Why does it matter?

The Roadster X+ is the first electric motorcycle in the country to be certified with a battery cell that has been developed entirely in house. No imports. No third party cells. This is Ola going full stack and then some.

The certified variant uses a large 9.1 kWh battery pack built around the 4680 Bharat Cell. Ola claims an industry leading range of up to 500 km on a single charge. That number matters. It pushes electric motorcycles beyond city limits and into the real world of highways, long commutes, and inter city rides. In simple terms, this bike is not afraid of distance.

Ola says the high range comes from the energy density and thermal performance of the 4680 cell architecture. The certification process involved a full suite of tests. These included range validation, braking performance, electromagnetic compatibility, gradeability, noise levels, and environmental testing. The bike also meets all safety norms laid down by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

The battery pack itself has already cleared ARAI certification under AIS 156 Amendment 4. This included tests for water immersion, thermal runaway, fire safety, vibration, and mechanical shock. Ola clearly wants to make one thing known. This is not a lab experiment. It is a production ready motorcycle that has survived the rule book.

With this certification, Ola Electric has now extended its 4680 Bharat Cell platform across both scooters and motorcycles. It strengthens the company’s vertical integration strategy, covering cells, battery packs, and vehicle platforms. The same architecture will also support future products, including those under the Ola Shakti platform.

Ola has not shared final delivery timelines in detail, but certification usually means things move fast from here.
