Key highlights
-  Sierra’s new 1.5L Hyperion petrol engine delivers a record-certified 29.9 kmpl
- Efficiency run carried out at NATRAX over 12 hours with official validation
- Real shocker: a full-size SUV outperforms the tiny Alto on fuel efficiency
The Tata Sierra has officially posted a jaw-dropping 29.9 kmpl in a certified 12-hour run at NATRAX, setting a new national record and casually beating the Maruti Suzuki Alto in the mileage game (not that the Alto is its competition). Yes, the same Alto that spent decades selling itself as the king of frugality.
The test
The record run was handled by the Pixel Motion team, who kept the Sierra circulating from 7 AM to 7 PM with only quick driver swaps. The numbers were verified on the same day and entered into the India Book of Records. This wasn’t a gentle downhill slope with tailwind magic. It was a controlled, monitored test environment that left no room for excuses.
The engine
The engine behind this upset is Tata’s all-new 1.5L Hyperion petrol unit. The motor focuses on efficiency without dulling the drive. It uses a new combustion setup, low-friction internals, and a torque band that stays usable even when efficiency is the priority. That balance allowed the Sierra to stay consistent through the entire run instead of doing one hero lap and then struggling.
And just to prove it’s not a one-trick pony, the same SUV clocked a top speed of 222 kmph at NATRAX in a parallel test. Before anyone gets creative on the highway, Tata has already confirmed that customer vehicles will be limited to 190 kmph because they do, in fact, like their customers alive.
Safety reminders apply, of course. These tests were carried out by trained drivers under controlled conditions. No one should try replicating them on public roads unless they enjoy being featured in a very different kind of news article.
