Tesla pulls the plug on Model S and Model X

The cars that made Tesla credible

The Tesla Model S changed the conversation around electric vehicles. It proved that an EV could be quick, premium, and genuinely desirable. At a time when electric cars felt like compromises, the Model S offered performance and practicality in one package.

The Tesla Model X followed with a more family-focused approach, wrapped in a bold design that stood out instantly. The Falcon Wing doors grabbed attention, but the real story was its ability to combine space, tech, and performance in a single package.

Together, these cars gave Tesla credibility in a market that was still skeptical about EVs.

Why Tesla is moving on

The decision to discontinue both models comes down to evolution. The Model S and Model X have had a long run, and while updates kept them relevant, the market has moved forward.

Tesla’s focus today is very different. The spotlight has shifted to high-volume models like the Model 3 and Model Y. These cars drive sales, scale production, and bring EVs to a wider audience.

At the same time, Tesla is investing heavily in next-generation platforms. Efficiency, cost optimisation, and scalability are now the priority. Continuing with older architectures does not align with that direction.

What this means for Tesla’s future

This move signals a clear shift. Tesla is focusing on the next phase of its growth, where scale matters more than legacy.

Future flagship models may arrive, but they will likely be built on new platforms with a stronger focus on efficiency and global adaptability. The brand is moving towards a more streamlined portfolio, one that reflects current market realities.

The Model S and Model X belong to a different era. An important one, but no longer central to Tesla’s strategy.
