Toyota Rumion gets six airbags as standard

Key highlights

  • Toyota Rumion now packs six airbags as standard—even on base trims.
  • Update aligns the MPV with upcoming Bharat NCAP safety norms.
  • No changes to engine, gearbox, or pricing.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor has quietly given the Rumion a big safety boost. The compact MPV now comes with six airbags as standard across the lineup, from the entry-level S MT to the top-spec VX AT. That means no matter which variant you pick, you’re getting full crash protection without shelling out extra.

Until now, side and curtain airbags were reserved for higher trims, while base variants had to make do with just dual front airbags. This update fixes that gap and gets the Rumion ready for Bharat NCAP’s stricter safety requirements.

What hasn’t changed

Under the skin, the Rumion stays the same. It’s powered by the familiar 1.5-litre K-series petrol engine making 103 PS and 137 Nm, paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic. For those who want lower running costs, the CNG option is still on offer.

Other safety and convenience kit continues, including:

  • ESP with hill-hold assist
  • ISOFIX child seat anchors
  • ABS with EBD
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Touchscreen infotainment with wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay (on higher trims)

Yes, it’s essentially a rebadged Maruti Ertiga, but Toyota backs it up with its own after-sales network and warranty coverage, something buyers value just as much as the badge.

Why this matters

Six airbags as standard isn’t just a feature, it’s the new baseline. With Bharat NCAP around the corner, carmakers can no longer treat full crash protection as a premium add-on. Toyota’s decision to offer this without hiking prices is a smart, customer-first move.

It also puts rivals like the Kia Carens and even the Ertiga itself on notice. If the Rumion can do it at no extra cost, why shouldn’t they?
