VinFast is dead on arrival in India – Here’s why
VinFast began operations in India not long ago. The Vietnamese brand made its Indian debut at the Bharat Mobility Expo 2025 in January and showcased a plethora of EVs, making Indian customers believe that this could be the next big brand.
However, the reality seems to be the opposite of what we witnessed at the expo. The brand is reported to be witnessing an extremely poor response in India. In fact, even in the tier-1 cities, their vehicles are not to be seen. Big cities which do give new brands a shot, seem to have given VinFast a miss. When Kia & MG arrived in India, they got a brilliant response even though the brands were all new.
With its VF6 and VF7 models on offer, even the aggressive pricing strategy seems to have not been able to help the brand identity formation among Indian customers. We hope VinFast does reveal official sales figures, so that if they have indeed found customers, the numbers give confidence to new potential buyers.
Reports suggest that even in key international markets, the brand is struggling in sales performance. India is a huge market, and there is scope for everyone to get a good piece of the pie. But the product has to be right, and the brand marketing needs to be confidence inspiring.
Moreover, the EVs on offer are not very promising either. The VF7, which happens to be the current flagship model in India, lacks a few features and luxury quotient. Even the design of both the models currently on sale is not really turning heads.
VinFast needs a new hero product. Which from the day of launch, creates the right kind of buzz and then the brand rides that wave to success. With the current products in showrooms, seems like the brand will have to struggle far to long to even grab 1% market share in the Indian auto industry.
We wish VinFast the best, and hope they put their best foot forward, and aggressively.
