Key highlights
- Volvo EX90 get an 800V architecture for faster charging and better performance.
- Older hardware replaced by dual Nvidia Orin chips, unlocking advanced safety and driver-assist features.
- New safety kit includes Emergency Stop Assist, automatic e-Call, and smarter parking tech.
Volvo has rolled out a major upgrade for its flagship electric SUV, the EX90, addressing both performance and tech shortcomings. The 2025 model now gets a new 800V electrical system and a dual-chip Nvidia setup, making it faster to charge, smarter to drive, and finally ready to deliver on its original promise.
Why the upgrade?
The EX90 was launched as a “software-defined vehicle,” but early buyers found the experience buggy and incomplete. Volvo’s fix? A full hardware transplant. The new setup replaces the older Nvidia Xavier chip with two Nvidia Drive AGX Orin units, offering 500 trillion operations per second. That’s enough computing power to run advanced driver-assist features, real-time safety alerts, and future OTA updates.
Faster charging, smarter driving
The switch to an 800V architecture bumps the EX90’s max charging speed from 250 kW to 350 kW. Volvo claims you can now add 250 km of range in just 10 minutes. That’s a big win for long-distance EV users who don’t want to spend half their road trip parked next to a charger.
The software upgrade also unlocks:
- Emergency Stop Assist (ESA)
- Automatic e-Call integration
- Enhanced pedestrian and cyclist detection
- Slippery road alerts and accident warnings
- Improved auto-parking with obstacle avoidance
These features were originally promised at launch but delayed due to hardware limitations. With the new system in place, they’re finally live.
Free upgrade for existing owners
Volvo isn’t just updating new builds. Owners of the 2025 EX90 will get a complimentary upgrade to the new core computer. The process requires a visit to a Volvo workshop and takes a few hours. Once installed, the car becomes eligible for future software updates and new features.
Without the upgrade, older EX90s won’t be able to access upcoming enhancements. Volvo has confirmed that dealers will reach out to schedule the swap, and no action is needed from customers for now.
India will get the updated version of the EX90 in the coming months.
