Yamaha has taken a bold new step into India’s electric two-wheeler scene with the EC-06, its first locally developed premium EV scooter. Interestingly, it’s based on the River Indie platform, a move that perfectly blends Yamaha’s global expertise with Indian EV ingenuity.
Developed and manufactured in collaboration with River, this partnership allows Yamaha to enter the market with a tried-and-tested urban electric base, fine-tuned with its signature sporty DNA.
Powertrain and Range
At its core, the EC-06 runs a 4.5 kW electric motor delivering 9.1 PS of peak power and instant torque. The motor draws energy from a 4 kWh fixed battery pack, giving the scooter a certified range of 160 km.
Charging is simple, just plug it into a regular home socket, and it’ll fully charge in about 9 hours. Riders get three ride modes to fine-tune performance and efficiency, plus a reverse mode for those tight parking spots. Power delivery feels smooth, and like most Yamahas, it loves being ridden with intent.
Design and Platform
While the EC-06 inherits its underpinnings and chassis layout from the River Indie, Yamaha has completely reimagined the scooter’s design and character. It features what Yamaha calls a “horizontal core” design philosophy, a compact, balanced, and visually grounded. The stance is athletic, with angular LED lighting, clean surfaces, and that unmistakable Yamaha sharpness.
Despite its sporty appeal, the EC-06 remains practical. It boasts 24.5 litres of under-seat storage, making it one of the roomiest scooters in its class. The ergonomics are designed for both city agility and interurban comfort, with a neutral riding position and light steering feel.
Features and Connectivity
True to Yamaha’s focus on rider engagement, the EC-06 packs in plenty of smart tech. It gets front and rear disc brakes, LED headlights and taillamps, and a colour LCD display that’s crisp and easy to read.
There’s also a built-in telematics unit with a SIM card, enabling live vehicle tracking, battery monitoring, and maintenance alerts through Yamaha’s connected app. The system keeps riders plugged into their scooter’s performance and health, literally and digitally.
Yamaha x River
By building the EC-06 on the River Indie platform, Yamaha gains access to a proven EV architecture that’s been engineered for Indian conditions. It’s sturdy, modular, and already road-tested, allowing Yamaha to focus on what it does best, refining the ride, tuning performance, and adding that intangible fun factor.
This collaboration is also a strategic play for Yamaha. Instead of reinventing the wheel (or in this case, the hub motor), it’s leveraging local innovation to go electric faster and smarter.
