Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a Chinese-specific long-wheelbase version of the GLE SUV. The new GLE LWB looks almost identical to the standard model, but it features a 120 mm longer wheelbase, which has been designed to offer a more comfortable rear seat experience.

Mercedes-Benz GLE LWB: What makes it different?

The primary change on the GLE LWB is the wheelbase length. The longer wheelbase means that the rear passengers now get more legroom and more space to relax. Moreover, Mercedes has also added the electric Boss Mode, which can recline the front passenger seat by up to 10.91 degrees with the touch of a button. The rear passengers can operate this feature easily, which adds substantial comfort for relaxing on longer journeys.

Moreover, the rear seats get an individual entertainment package like the GLS, but it is optional. Another addition is the Chinese-specific AI assistant, which helps in understanding local slang and other language-specific commands. This is a welcome feature, as Chinese rivals of the Mercedes GLE, like BYD and Xiaomi, are now featuring an advanced level of AI in their vehicles.

On the exterior, the only update is the new 10-spoke star-shaped alloy wheels. Meanwhile, the interior also continues to feature the triple-screen layout with 12.3-inch displays, a three-spoke steering wheel with rocker-type physical buttons, ambient lighting, a glass roof, electric sunshades, and more.

Powering the new GLE LWB are two engine options in the Chinese market, which are as follows:

  • 350 L 4MATIC: 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol, 258 bhp and 400 Nm
  • 450 L 4MATIC: 3.0-litre inline-six-cylinder turbocharged petrol, 381 bhp and 560 Nm

Both of these powertrains are paired with a 9-speed automatic gearbox. Moreover, Mercedes offers its trademark 4MATIC all-wheel drive configuration on both variants as standard.

Mercedes has not announced any plans to launch the GLE LWB in India as of now. However, it will make an interesting case if it gets launched, as the base-spec GLS buyers looking for space will eventually shift to it.
