- Bajaj Auto downsizes Dominar 400 engine to 349cc
- Price drops by up to Rs 40,000 thanks to lower GST
- Performance and features remain largely unchanged
Bajaj has effectively reworked the Bajaj Dominar 400 by giving it a smaller 350cc engine. This is a result of the new strategy that Bajaj is applying to all their 400cc products.
Same bike, different strategy
At first glance, nothing changes. The Dominar still looks like the same muscular touring machine. Same stance, same road presence, same long-distance intent. Bajaj has not touched the design, and honestly, it did not need to.
The big change sits under the tank. The earlier 373cc motor has now been downsized to around 349cc. By dropping below the 350cc mark, Bajaj brings the bike under the lower 18 percent GST slab instead of the earlier 40 percent. That directly reflects in the price.
A serious price correction
The earlier Dominar 400 was priced around Rs 2.40 lakh. The new version comes in at Rs 1.99 lakh ex-showroom. That is a straight saving of about Rs 40,000.
In percentage terms, that is a big drop. In real-world buying decisions, that is the difference between “maybe later” and “let’s do it”.
Performance takes a small hit
Now the obvious question. What do you lose? On paper, not much. The new 350cc motor produces around 39PS and 33Nm. The older 400 made about 40PS and 35Nm. So yes, there is a slight drop. But it is marginal.
In real-world riding, especially touring, you are unlikely to feel a dramatic difference. In fact, early impressions suggest the engine feels more refined and easier to live with.
Everything else stays intact
You still get USD forks, a monoshock, dual-channel ABS, traction control, ride modes, LED lighting, and the same solid hardware package. Even the exhaust note and overall character remain familiar.
Bajaj is will continue calling it the Dominar 400. That is a branding move to avoid confusing buyers who associate the name with performance. The Pulsar NS400Z has got the same treatment as well.
