Mercedes-Benz trims entry line-up in India, four models discontinued

Key highlights

  • Mercedes-Benz discontinues four models in India
  • A-Class sedan, EQA, EQB and EQE SUV phased out
  • New-gen CLA will replace multiple entry-level models

Mercedes-Benz is cleaning house in India. And this is not a minor reshuffle. The brand has discontinued four models from its portfolio, including the entry-level A-Class sedan and three EQ-badged EVs. This move signals a clear shift in strategy rather than a simple product update.

The axe falls on entry-level models

The models being phased out include the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, Mercedes-Benz EQA, Mercedes-Benz EQB, and the Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV. These cars formed the base of Mercedes’ entry and mid-level EV portfolio in India.

The A-Class sedan, in particular, played a key role in bringing younger buyers into the brand. But globally, Mercedes has already been moving away from compact sedans in favour of higher-margin SUVs.

The EQ models, on the other hand, are being phased out as part of a larger rethink of the company’s EV strategy.

One car to replace many

Instead of multiple entry-level models, Mercedes is now consolidating its lineup. The new Mercedes-Benz CLA electric will effectively replace the A-Class, EQA, and EQB in India.

Rather than offering separate ICE and EV options across body styles, Mercedes is moving towards a unified approach. The new CLA will sit on a next-gen platform and offer both electric and hybrid options globally.

Why the EQ models are being phased out

The EQ sub-brand had a strong start, but things did not go exactly as planned. Models like the EQE SUV struggled to justify their positioning, especially when compared to traditional Mercedes offerings. Globally, the company is already preparing to phase out some EQ models and replace them with next-gen EVs under familiar nameplates.

The EQB is also nearing the end of its lifecycle, with a successor already in development. So this is not just an India-specific move. It is part of a global reset.

Bigger focus on premium and scalable EVs

Mercedes is not stepping back from EVs. It is doubling down, just differently. Future models will move away from the EQ naming strategy and integrate electric versions into core model lines like the C-Class and GLC. This means better economies of scale, clearer branding, and hopefully, better products.

For India, it also means fewer but more focused offerings.
