Key highlights
- The Range Rover Electric and Range Rover Sport Electric are expected to launch in India in the second half of 2027.
- Both electric SUVs will initially arrive as completely built units (CBUs) imported from the UK.
- JLR will consider local assembly later, depending on market response.
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) will bring the all-electric versions of the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport to India as fully imported models. While the combustion-engine versions of both SUVs are locally assembled, the electric derivatives will initially follow the CBU route..
Local assembly depends on market response
The decision comes despite both electric SUVs sharing JLR’s MLA-Flex platform with their combustion-engine counterparts. The architecture is designed to accommodate different powertrains, and the vehicles are manufactured on the same production line.
However, JLR is taking a cautious approach to electrification in India. The company wants to understand how customers respond to these premium electric SUVs before committing to local production.
The India-UK free trade agreement also does not provide tariff concessions for electric vehicles during its first five years. This means importing the models as CBUs could have a significant bearing on their eventual pricing.
JLR has not confirmed whether local assembly will eventually begin or when such a move could happen.
What to expect from the electric SUVs
Both models use JLR’s 800V MLA-Flex architecture and a 118.5 kWh battery pack. The Range Rover Electric gets a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup producing up to 550 hp and 850Nm, with a claimed WLTP range of up to 600 km.
The Range Rover Sport Electric also develops up to 550 hp and 850 Nm, with a claimed WLTP range of 609km. It can accelerate from 0-100kph in a claimed 4.5 seconds.
Both support DC fast charging at up to 350kW, with a claimed 10-80 percent charge time of around 22 minutes under suitable conditions.
Prices for India have not been announced. The CBU route means buyers should expect these electric SUVs to sit at a premium over their locally assembled combustion-engine counterparts.
