Aprilia could be bringing back one of its more distinctive scooter names in India. The SXR 175 is expected to launch around September.
The timing is interesting because Aprilia quietly discontinued the SXR 125 and SXR 160 earlier this year. The two scooters were removed from the Indian line-up without a formal announcement, leaving the SXR name without a successor.
If the SXR 175 does arrive, it would therefore mark a return rather than simply an expansion of the existing range.
Bigger engine, familiar SXR formula
The earlier SXR models were positioned as maxi-scooters, with larger bodywork and a more substantial riding position than the SR range. They also used a 12-inch wheel setup, while the SR scooters use 14-inch wheels.
The new SXR 175 is expected to follow the same basic idea, but with Aprilia’s newer 175cc engine.
The SR 175 currently uses a 174.7 cc single-cylinder motor producing around 13.1 hp and 14.14 Nm. It is paired with a CVT and can reach a claimed top speed of around 95 kmph.
Whether the SXR 175 gets exactly the same state of tune remains to be seen.
A more practical Aprilia
The SXR’s maxi-scooter design could also give Aprilia something different from the sporty SR 175. The previous SXR models had a larger front fairing, a more substantial windscreen and a more relaxed appearance. That makes the format better suited to riders who want an Aprilia but are looking for something with a little more touring ability.
The SXR 175 could also benefit from the newer equipment available on the SR 175, including its colour TFT display with Bluetooth connectivity and ABS. However, these features have not yet been confirmed for the upcoming scooter.
Aprilia has not officially confirmed the SXR 175’s launch date yet, so September should be treated as an expected timeline rather than a confirmed one.
