BMW has launched the i5 Long Wheelbase (LWB) in India, bringing a larger, more rear-seat-focused version of its electric executive sedan to the market. Priced at Rs 79.6 lakh (ex-showroom), the i5 LWB is also BMW India’s first locally produced electric sedan. Production takes place at the company’s Chennai plant, with deliveries commencing immediately.
More space
The i5 LWB is available in the eDrive35L M Sport specification. It measures 5,175 mm in length and has a 3,105 mm wheelbase, making it particularly focused on rear-seat space. BMW also equips it with rear-axle air suspension and increased ground clearance to better suit Indian road conditions.
Powertrain
Power comes from a single electric motor producing 268 hp and 410 Nm. The sedan can accelerate from 0-100 kmph in 6.7 seconds and has a top speed of 195 kmph.
Energy comes from an 81.6 kWh battery, providing a claimed range of up to 669 km on the MIDC cycle. It supports DC fast charging at up to 160kW, allowing a 10-80 percent charge in 33 minutes. An 11 kW BMW Wallbox charger is also included with the car.
Key features
Inside, the i5 LWB gets BMW’s Curved Display combining a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 14.9-inch touchscreen. Other highlights include a Sky Lounge panoramic glass roof, four-zone climate control, ventilated front seats, CraftedClarity crystal elements and a Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system.
The car also gets BMW Operating System 8.5, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Digital Key Plus, remote parking, Parking Assistant Professional and multiple driver-assistance features.
First Edition
BMW is also offering a First Edition limited to 99 units. Interestingly, all 99 examples were sold before the official launch. This version gets exclusive exterior and interior detailing along with a dedicated rear-seat entertainment package.
Final thoughts
The BMW i5 LWB is clearly designed around a very Indian interpretation of luxury i.e. longer, quieter, more comfortable and particularly generous in the back seat. Add a 669 km claimed range and local production, and BMW has created an interesting electric alternative for buyers who still want the traditional executive-sedan experience.
