BMW India has opened pre-orders for the M2 xDrive Turbo Edition, a special edition that pays tribute to the iconic 1973 BMW 2002 Turbo. The car will be offered in strictly limited numbers, with bookings handled through authorised BMW dealerships on a first-come, first-served basis.
The edition combines the modern M2’s performance credentials with styling inspired by one of BMW’s pioneering turbocharged road cars. BMW has not yet announced its price or the exact number of units allocated to India.
Retro-inspired design with carbon-fibre elements
The M2 xDrive Turbo Edition comes exclusively in Alpine White, featuring hand-painted BMW Motorsport stripes. A black power dome and the reversed ‘turbo’ script on the bonnet recall the distinctive design of the original 2002 Turbo.
The special edition also gets a bespoke ‘turbo’ emblem beneath the M2 badge, along with M stripes running across the bonnet. A carbon-fibre roof, carbon-fibre tailgate and carbon-fibre rear spoiler add to its motorsport-inspired appearance. Buyers can also opt for 19-inch front and 20-inch rear M Performance forged wheels finished in Gold Bronze.
The cabin gets M Carbon bucket seats, an M Alcantara steering wheel and carbon-fibre interior trim. An exclusive ‘turbo’ badge on the centre cupholder cover completes the special-edition treatment.
Powertrain
Under the bonnet, the BMW M2 xDrive Turbo Edition uses a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder engine producing 480 hp (approximately 486 PS) and 353 kW of power. BMW claims a 0-100 kmph acceleration time of 3.7 seconds. The electronically limited top speed is 250 kmph, rising to 285 kmph with the optional M Driver’s Package.
While the special edition focuses heavily on design, these performance figures ensure that it remains firmly in BMW M territory.
A tribute to the 1973 BMW 2002 Turbo
The original BMW 2002 Turbo was introduced in 1973, during a period of significant upheaval in the global automotive industry. Its 170 hp engine and top speed exceeding 200 km/h made it an ambitious performance car for its time.
More importantly, it helped establish turbocharging as a technology for production passenger cars. The new M2 xDrive Turbo Edition revisits that legacy through its distinctive graphics and exclusive detailing, rather than attempting to replicate the original car’s mechanical package.
