Volkswagen has been silently working on a new compact SUV for the global market. This new SUV is based on the same platform and powertrain as the Skoda Kylaq. Now, a recent online report has revealed that Volkswagen India has received the green flag from the global wing for this new project, which costs Rs 275 crore.
What can we expect from the new Volkswagen compact SUV?
The success of Skoda Kylaq has turned the inevitable fate of Skoda India from going bankrupt to selling newer cars. Skoda introduced the Kylaq in 2024, and it became an instant hit within the first few months of the launch.
On the other hand, Skoda’s sibling brand Volkswagen has no vehicle to compete in the sub-four-metre vehicle segment in India, which is considered a high-volume market. Brands like Hyundai and Tata have their offerings in this segment that sell like hot cakes.
Meanwhile, this new VW compact SUV has now received global wing approval. It is being developed at a cost of Rs 275 crore, and it is most likely to be introduced next year.
The major differentiation that we can expect between the Skoda Kylaq and the VW SUV will be in terms of the exterior and interior design, and the list of features. Unlike Skoda, Volkswagen cars boast a clutter-free design with sleek LED lighting and timeless body panels that age slowly and look classic with time.
Same engine as Kylaq
However, the powertrain option will remain the same on both SUVs. The Kylaq uses a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol TSI engine that makes 118 bhp. This engine is offered with a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed AISIN-sourced torque converter automatic gearbox in India.
We suspect that the same drivetrain options will be offered on Volkswagen’s compact SUV. Additionally, the 6-speed AT gearbox on the Kylaq is likely to be replaced by the new 8-speed AT. It made its debut on the new Taigun facelift recently. The same could also feature on the sub-compact SUV.
Furthermore, the exact launch timeline of this SUV is yet to be determined. We can safely say that it will be launched next year, since it has already been under development for the past six months.
