Mahindra XUV 3XO CNG official teaser released, launch on October 15

Key highlights

  • Mahindra XUV 3XO CNG officially teased
  • RevX fascia, panoramic sunroof, LED lights confirmed
  • Likely to be powered by a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo MPFI engine

Mahindra has released the first official teaser of the new XUV 3XO CNG. It will be Mahindra’s first-ever CNG car to go on sale, as its launch is scheduled for October 15. The teaser has confirmed the front fascia design and a few features that will be offered with the new CNG powertrain.

RevX M fascia, panoramic sunroof, and more features confirmed

The official teaser shows the front design of the XUV 3XO, similar to the RevX M variant of the standard model. The front grille is closed with diagonal chrome slats, while the sharp C-shaped LED DRLs enclose the projector LED headlights. This unique element gives the CNG XUV 3XO a different appeal than the standard petrol/diesel variants.

Moreover, the teaser shows a dual-tone exterior paint shade offering a red and black combination, with the roof and mirrors painted in black colour. A slight glimpse of the side profile is also visible in the teaser, confirming a similar design to the standard model.

We expect no major changes to the exterior of the CNG version, save for the CNG stickers on the windshields. However, Mahindra could introduce an exclusive colour option on the XUV 3XO CNG, but that remains to be seen as of now. Additionally, the teaser has also confirmed the panoramic sunroof, which means that a number of CNG variants will be offered with fully-loaded options.

To get a turbo CNG engine

While the official details will be unveiled in the next 48 hours, online reports hint that the XUV 3XO CNG will be powered by the 1.2-litre MPFI three-cylinder turbocharged engine that will run on CNG and petrol. This engine is offered with the petrol-only option on the lower variants, and it makes 111 bhp on petrol. With CNG, we can expect a drop of around 20 percent in the peak power output.

Another interesting bit will be the placement of the CNG tank. While rivals like the Tata Nexon i-CNG offer an underbody CNG tank, which further offers usable boot space, the XUV 3XO is likely to get a boot-mounted CNG tank. If so, this will be a big con, since the ICE version already has the smallest boot in the segment.

Moreover, Mahindra offers a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox on the petrol version of this engine. It will be interesting to see whether the automatic gearbox is offered on the CNG version or not. If yes, this could become a game-changer, as no other competitor offers the CNG and automatic powertrain combination.

Mahindra XUV 3XO CNG: Third CNG C-SUV in the segment

The XUV 3XO CNG will be the third CNG SUV in the compact SUV segment. Currently, the Maruti Suzuki Brezza S-CNG and the Tata Nexon i-CNG offer the CNG powertrain.
