Hyundai Motor India has unveiled the India-spec Bayon, a new SUV that puts connected technology and artificial intelligence at the centre of its appeal. The company will launch the Bayon on October 26, with prices expected to be announced on the same day. Bookings are already open through Hyundai dealerships and its official website for Rs 11,000.
The Bayon is expected to slot between the Venue and Creta in Hyundai’s Indian SUV portfolio, giving buyers another option in the increasingly competitive compact and midsize SUV space. Unlike the usual launch announcements that focus primarily on styling and equipment, Hyundai is highlighting the Bayon’s software capabilities as a key differentiator.
Generative AI takes centre stage
The Bayon will be the first Hyundai model in India to feature a generative AI voice assistant. It combines intelligence from Perplexity with voice AI technology from SoundHound AI, allowing users to make conversational requests for information such as weather updates, travel itineraries, hotel suggestions and restaurant recommendations.
However, there is an important distinction. Hyundai says the generative AI assistant can be interacted with in English only. Separately, the SUV supports more than 500 embedded voice commands in English, Hindi, Hinglish, Tamil, Bengali and Telugu, allowing several vehicle functions to be operated without an internet connection.
Over-the-air updates and connected features
The SUV also gets Hyundai’s Connected Car Navigation Cockpit (ccNC), accelerated by NVIDIA technology, with online navigation, split-screen functionality and personalised controls. Two curved 12.3-inch displays bring the instrument cluster and infotainment system together in a digital cockpit.
Hyundai says up to 19 vehicle controllers can receive over-the-air (OTA) updates, allowing compatible software enhancements without requiring a dealership visit. The SUV also offers more than 70 Hyundai Bluelink connected features, including remote vehicle controls, vehicle information and location-related services.
Powertrain
Power comes from a four-cylinder, 1.5-litre naturally aspirated MPi petrol engine that develops 115 PS and 144 Nm. Buyers will be able to choose between a six-speed manual gearbox and Hyundai’s Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT) automatic.
Hyundai has not yet announced the Bayon’s prices, variant lineup or fuel-efficiency figures. These details will be important in determining how it stacks up against established rivals.
The company says deliveries are scheduled to begin during the festive season, with more specific timelines to be communicated at launch.
