Renault is set to launch the Duster strong-hybrid in India on October 17, 2026, adding a third powertrain to the SUV’s lineup. The hybrid will sit alongside the existing 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engines and marks the debut of Renault’s E-Tech hybrid technology in India.
Renault Duster hybrid powertrain explained
The Duster E-Tech uses a 1,789 cc naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine paired with two electric motors. One 20 hp motor acts as a generator, while the 49 hp electric motor drives the wheels. The combined system produces 160 hp and 172 Nm, with energy stored in a 1.4 kWh battery pack.
Unlike the Toyota hybrid system used by the Grand Vitara, Victoris and Hyryder, Renault uses a multi-mode automatic transmission with fixed gear ratios. The system can switch between electric drive, petrol engine drive and a combination of both.
Renault claims the hybrid system can enable up to 80% of city driving in EV mode. Electric-only running at low speeds, regenerative braking and shutting off the petrol engine when it is not required are expected to improve efficiency in urban conditions. Actual fuel economy, however, will vary depending on traffic, speed and driving conditions.
Duster hybrid to rival Grand Vitara and Hyryder
The new hybrid will compete directly with the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Maruti Suzuki Victoris and Toyota Hyryder, all of which already offer strong-hybrid powertrains.
The hybrid also gives Renault an alternative to diesel, which is not offered on the new-generation Duster. The existing range continues with the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol and 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engines.
Final thoughts
The Duster hybrid brings a different approach to India’s growing strong-hybrid SUV segment. Its multi-mode gearbox and larger battery make it mechanically distinct from the Toyota-developed hybrid system used by several rivals. With prices due to be announced on October 17, the hybrid’s positioning will be key.
