Tata Punch launched in South Africa with turbo-petrol engine, prices start at R 2.24 lakh

Key highlights

  • Tata has launched the updated Punch in South Africa, priced from R 224,900 (approximately Rs 12.82 lakh).
  • The SUV gets naturally aspirated and turbo-petrol engine options, both paired with manual gearboxes.
  • Six airbags, wireless smartphone connectivity and a five-year warranty are part of the package.

Tata Motors has expanded its international portfolio with the launch of the updated Punch in South Africa. The compact SUV is being offered in three variants, with prices ranging from R 224,900 to R 269,900. The South African lineup also gets the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine, which is offered on the range-topping Accomplished+ S variant.

The launch was carried out in partnership with Motus Holdings, Tata Motors’ distribution partner in South Africa. Interestingly, the new Punch gets a longer warranty than the model sold in India, although the powertrain choices are more limited.

The prices translate to approximately Rs 12.82 lakh, Rs 13.96 lakh and Rs 15.36 lakh, respectively, based on the conversions reported at launch. These are not directly comparable with Indian ex-showroom prices, as taxes, import costs and market-specific pricing structures differ.

Powertrain

The South African-spec Punch gets a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 88 hp and 115 Nm. It is paired with a five-speed manual gearbox.

The more interesting option is the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine, which develops 120 hp and 170 Nm. It comes with a six-speed manual transmission and is exclusive to the top-spec Accomplished+ S.

Unlike the Indian model, the South African lineup does not get an AMT gearbox or a CNG option. Buyers therefore have to make do with a manual transmission, irrespective of the engine they choose.

Features and safety equipment

The South African Punch retains the updated model’s exterior design, including the redesigned front fascia, LED lighting elements and connected LED tail-lamps on higher variants.

Inside, the cabin gets an eight-inch touchscreen on lower trims, while the top-spec version features a larger 10.25-inch Harman infotainment system. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are offered across the range.

Six airbags are standard across all three trims, along with electronic stability control. Tata also highlights the updated Punch’s five-star Bharat NCAP rating.

Another notable difference is the ownership package. The South African model gets a five-year/125,000km warranty and a two-year/30,000km service plan, compared with the three-year/100,000km warranty offered in India.
