Key highlights
- FASTag local pass introduced from November 1, 2026
- Available for residents living within 20km of a toll
- Only non-commercial vehicles will be eligible for the local pass
National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced a new local pass system for residents living within a 20 km radius of a National Highway toll plaza. This new local pass will be available from November 1, 2026 onwards.
As per the official details, this local pass will cost Rs 1,500, as opposed to Rs 3,075 for the annual pass that is eligible countrywide. However, it is important to note that the local pass will only be available for residents with non-commercial vehicles.
Additionally, this local pass will be available only for a specific toll plaza. It can not be used on any other toll plaza, as the details will not match when scanned. Moreover, NHAI has stated that the local toll pass will not be available for toll plazas where a service road or an alternative road is available for commuters.
Moreover, it is interesting to note that the annual local pass will cost Rs 1,500 only for the toll plazas that are outside municipal or local town limits. Meanwhile, the toll plazas that are within a municipal or local town will be charged Rs 3,000 for the annual local pass.
Who does the FASTag local pass make sense for?
The newly introduced concessional local pass is best suited for rural residents, where a toll plaza is often cited as a problem for locals, as they need to pass it regularly. Rs 1,500 for an annual pass to cross multiple times is a cheap option rather than paying for a yearly pass.
However, since a vehicle is used for far more than one toll plaza, the local pass will be best for a single vehicle that is solely used within the 20 km radius of the specific toll plaza.
